An Elegant Child Theme Made with ❤ for Divi

Installing Balance

Thank you for purchasing Balance!

Thanks for purchasing Balance, a premium multi-purpose child theme for Divi, designed by Carrie Green and developed by Nathan Duvall of GruffyGoat.com.

In this page you will find step-by-step instructions explaining how to install your new child theme as well as import the Balance customizations and features.

Balance was built specifically for use with Divi by Elegant Themes. In order to install this child theme, you must first purchase a membership to Elegant Themes and download the Divi theme package. If you've not yet purchased a membership, visit http://elegantthemes.com.

Installing the Theme:

Once you've downloaded the Divi theme package, login to your WordPress website and go to Appearance > Themes. Find and upload the Divi parent theme and activate it.

Just like you installed the Divi parent theme, install & activate the Balance.zip child theme located in your Balance download package.

Importing the Balance Sample Content:

From your WordPress admin panel, click the Tools > Import link in your WordPress Dashboard. This will bring you to a new page with a list of import types. Click the “WordPress” link to download and install the importer.

Once the importer plugin has been installed, click the Tools > Import > WordPress link again to open the importer. You will see an option to upload an XML file. Click the “Choose File” link and locate the balance-content.xml file from your Balance download package. Complete the import dialog to finalize the import and add all pages, posts & content.

Visit Pages or Posts to confirm that your sample content has been imported. Also visit the Divi > Divi Library page to confirm that your library items have been imported. If all is good, proceed to the next step.

Balance Theme Settings:

If you would like to match the look of the Balance demo, you'll need to import the Balance Divi settings. Go to the Divi Menu > Migrate Settings. Click ‘choose file' and locate the balance-divi-settings.txt located in your Import file.

Click Upload File to import all of the delicious Balance colors and design settings. You'll get a confirmation message once it's loaded successfully.

Next, head to Settings > Reading and set Home as your static Front page.

Why do I get errors when I try to upload the theme?

“The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.”

If you're getting this error or anything similar, it's probably because you're trying to upload the main .zip file that you purchased and downloaded. You first need to unzip the main download package to see the Balance Child Theme .zip file. This is what you need to upload.

Why am I getting errors when I try to upload the Divi Library?

“Failed to Import: Invalid post type et_pb_layout”

If you're getting this error, it's likely because you do not have the latest version of the Divi theme installed on your site. Certain post types were introduced in Divi 2.4 that were not previously available. In order to upload the Balance sample pages & styles, you must first update Divi to the latest version.

How do I change the colors of the inside page header blocks?

The internal page header consist of 2 columns – the first contains the Logo & Tagline section. The second column contains the page title. To update the color of the first column, open up the Logo & Tagline module > Advanced Design Settings > Change the Background Color as desired:

Changing the second column color Page Title block is a little different because we're using both a seamless pattern + a background color. To adjust these, open up the Row > Custom CSS > Column 2 Main Element and change the color code or use your own custom pattern URL!

How do I change the logo in the inside page header?

By default, we've added a logo image in the left section of the inside page header. This can be easily replaced with your site logo, text or whatever you would like to add. We've also left it as a standard section instead of a global section so that you can have unique header content per page – but this can be easily made to be a global section so that you update it once and it updates it across the site.

How do I change the header image on the recipe/blog post?

The recipe/blog post template is setup to allow a custom header image instead of the standard featured image. Simply open up the header section and add a separate photo or simply use the same feature image you've already added to your post.

If you would would like to change/remove the overlay on the header image, open up the Custom CSS tab and adjust the background setting on the ‘before' box.

I have drop-down menus and my mobile menu looks weird

The Balance mobile menu styling isn't appropriate for every use case, especially those with one or more drop-down menus. To remove the Balance mobile menu style, simply go to Appearance > Editor > style.css and search for the Mobile Menu styles, located towards the bottom of the page. You can either remove the 2 sections below or comment them out, as illustrated below. This will return your mobile menu to the Divi default, where you will be able to style them as desired, using the Divi Customizer panel.

/* –Remove Balance Mobile Menu Style
.et_mobile_menu li a {
display: inline-block;
float: left;
width: 48%;
margin: 1%;
background: #2b3849;
color: #fff!important;
border-radius: 3px;
text-transform: uppercase;
font-size: 14px;
text-align: center;

/* –Remove Balance Current Menu Item Style
.current-menu-item a {
background: #c94277!important;

My drop-down menus are not displaying on scroll

We found a bug in our initial release, so if you're still having this problem, just head to Appearance > Editor > styles.css search for the selector #main-header.sticky and change the following: overflow-y: visible

This will correct the issue.

How do I change the default login screen background?

Just login and go to Plugins > Editor > choose Divi Login from the drop-down list. Open up login-styles.css and replace the .login background with your own background URL.

How do I change the footer text?

To change the footer text and credits, login to your WordPress admin and go to Appearance > Editor and open up the footer.php page. Scroll until you find this section:

<p id=”footer-info”>
© <?php echo date(“Y”) ?> <b>Balance</b> by <a target=”_blank” href=”http://elegantchildthemes.com”>Elegant Child Themes</a>  |  Designed by <a target=”_blank” href=”http://carriecgreen.com”>Carrie Green</a> + <a target=”_blank” href=”http://gruffygoat.com”>GruffyGoat</a>  |  All Rights Reserved.

Simply replace the text as needed with your own text or links, save the page and you're good to go!

How do I change the menu so it's at the top?

We've developed a cool, unique menu to go along with the Balance layout, but if that's not your style, it's easy to return it back to the standard layout. Just go to Appearance > Editor > style.css and look for the following section and remove it. If you think you might want to use it at a later date, just be sure to save a backup so you can copy & paste it back in later:

/*---------------[Desktop Menu Styles]------------*/
@media (min-width: 980px) {
#main-header, #balance-header {
 position: absolute !important;
 top: 25em!important;
 background-color: #fff;
#main-header.sticky {
 position: fixed !important;
 width: 100%;
 left: 0;
 top: 0 !important;
 border-top: 0;
 /*overflow-y: hidden;*/
 overflow-y: visible; /* Fix for drop down menus */
 /*background: rgba(255,255,255,0.95);*/
#main-header .container {
 width: 95%;
 max-width: 95%;
#page-container {
 padding-top: 0!important;
 position: fixed;
 overflow-y: auto;
 max-height: 100%;
 width: 100%;
.et_pb_scroll_top.et-pb-icon {
 right: 16px;
.et_header_style_centered.et_hide_primary_logo #main-header:not(.et-fixed-header) .logo_container, .et_header_style_centered.et_hide_fixed_logo #main-header.et-fixed-header .logo_container, .et_header_style_centered #top-menu > li > a {
 padding-bottom: 30px!important;
/* Search Results */
.search #main-header, .search #balance-header, .search #main-header.sticky, .archive #main-header, .archive #balance-header, .archive #main-header.sticky, .error404 #main-header, .error404 #balance-header, .error404 #main-header.sticky {
 top: 0!important;
 position: absolute!important;
.search #page-container, .archive #page-container, .error404 #page-container {
 padding-top: 80px!important;
